Do You Need Marijuana Addiction Treatment?

It can be hard to tell people that you have a marijuana use disorder because so many people believe that marijuana cannot be addictive. How, then, can you move on to considering marijuana drug addiction treatment? You need to be able to access that help.

According to the Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration, roughly 4.2 million people ages 12 and over met the criteria for a marijuana use disorder in 2014. That’s millions of people who could benefit from treatment and you are one of them. Know that you aren’t alone in having difficulty curbing your marijuana use even though it is causing problems in your life.

Do I Have a Marijuana Use Disorder?

The criteria for a marijuana use disorder is determined by the Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders (now in its fifth edition). So, this is the set of requirements used by physicians and treatment centers.

You have to have done at least two of the following within the last 12 months. Have you:

1.Taken marijuana
2.Failed in your attempts to limit your marijuana use?
3.Spent a lot of time performing actions needed for obtaining, using or rebounding from marijuana use?
4.Experienced strong cravings?
5.Been unable to fulfill your obligations because of marijuana use?
6.Continued to use even though it is causing persistent or recurrent problems?
7.Replaced your previous social, occupational, and/or recreational activities with marijuana use?
8.Used marijuana in a situation that poses a danger?
9.Experienced withdrawals?
10.Developed tolerance?

An article in the Journal of the American Medical Association Psychiatry interviewed over 36,000 adults in the united states and the authors found:

  • When compared to the period between 2001 and 2002, there were twice as many marijuana users and individuals with marijuana use disorders between 2012 and 2013.
  • Constantly, past year and lifetime marijuana use disorders are connected to mental health disorders and other substance use.
